Test Integration Actions in Workflow Builder

SMBcrm now supports live testing for external-app action steps inside Workflow Builder. This helps builders validate mapped inputs, run the action against the connected app, and review the provider response before relying on the step in a workflow.

What changed

A Test Action button is available on every external-app action step. From the action configuration card, builders can launch a test flow without leaving the workflow setup experience.

When a test runs, SMBcrm uses the same connected account the action will use at runtime. Workflow variables, custom values, and transformations are resolved and applied the same way they would be when the workflow runs.

This gives teams using SMBcrm automation a clearer way to check integration actions during configuration.

What the test shows

The test drawer displays two side-by-side views:

  • Data In: The resolved inputs that will be sent to the provider after variable interpolation and transformations.
  • Data Out: The raw JSON response returned by the provider.

Large payloads are scrollable. Key response fields are also surfaced as inline chips and cards above the expandable JSON, making important values easier to review.

How it works

  1. Configure the external-app action as usual by selecting the integration, choosing the action, and mapping the required inputs.
  2. If the action depends on custom values from earlier workflow steps, those upstream values must be resolvable before the test can run.
  3. Click Test Action.
  4. The test drawer opens with a progress state while the live call runs.
  5. After a successful test, review the Data In and Data Out results.

The response schema automatically populates output fields that can be used by later workflow steps.

Why it matters

This update reduces the gap between setup and runtime by letting builders confirm how an integration action behaves while they are still configuring the workflow.
